A fun and thrilling read! by Lila L. Pinord
Barracuda- even the name conjures up images of danger. Big danger- lurking just below the surface, waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim by like sharks, smaller fish. You. Me.
Although the book starts out slow, the pace picks up gradually after all the “good guys”- the injured cop from NYC, the FBI agents, other divers- and the “bad guys”-the Russian Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza, and all their henchmen- are in place and ready to do battle, not only against each other, but also against the giant mutant barracuda that’s already taken its toll on divers of the deep at this fancy divers hotel.
Monahan gives us a lot of background plus the results of the disastrous nuclear testing that was done on the Bikini Atoll. After all the scuba diving information included in the book, this readers feels ready to dare venture underwater to explore, providing there is not a mutant barracuda lurking there! For underwater - and above water- thrills, read this one!

barracuda by Lorraine Stewart
I loved the book “Barracuda”, and didn’t want to put it down. The main character was Micko, a NYPD detective on a “relaxing” vacation that turned out to be anything but…There were many other very believable characters and subplots to the story. Mike Monahan used a lot of detail and humor. Suspense and mystery were created making the reader wonder what havoc this mutated barracuda at this beautiful resort would cause! Mike also gave a brief history of the area, giving an explanation for the mutation. I look forward to the next book, Mike.
Started off with an interesting premise by
I had high hopes for this book after reading the intro which explained the history of Bikini Atoll. The story line was decent but I found the writing style sophmoric and the dialogue between characters forced and phony.
MIKE MONAHAN HAS BEEN THERE DONE THAT…IT SHOWS by Bill Flynn
The true historic preface to Barracuda reminds us all of the Atomic Testing around the Bikini Atol and its dire consequence to the people there and the surrounding marine life. It should never happen again.
Then the plot goes fictitious, but believable. It delves into the thoughts of a mutant barracuda who has been made much larger and more vicious by the genes passed on from barracudas who were there when radiation from the atomic blasts prevailed. The fish is meaner than the proverbial ‘junk yard dog’ and makes the great white shark in the film ‘Jaws’ look like a guppy.
The diving regiment by the protagonist, Micko, is tutorial. If you’ve never dove with scubba gear down deep in the briney you may learn more than you want to. That, and the sluething by Micko rings very factual and comes from the author, a master diver and NYPD detective.
Barracuda should be made into a film. Its got it all: The beauty of a South Pacific Atol; foreign intrigue, with bad guy Japanese and Russian Mafia, whose paranoid vengence causes havoc to surround a resort hotel; Tanya, as mean as the Dragon Lady and just as sexy… as Micko discovers.
The ending pyrotechnics of a fire works barge discharging its load on and around the hotel, would be a hollywood special effects guru’s dream as well as the final demise of the barracuta by way of an ancient torpedo detonation.
Mike Monahan has given us a great tale and if you read carefully, it may not be his last one at that same venue. There’s something about some eggs left behind that could be mutated into another super barracuda preditor. Watch out Jaws, here comes Mike Monahan.
